Eagles Lock in Home Final after Defeating Lions

West Coast has guaranteed itself a home final against Collingwood next fortnight, after dismantling Brisbane by 26 points at the 'Gabba.

The Lions brought the challenge to the visitors in the opening quarter, yet the Eagles completely dominated in the second with four unanswered goals, leaving the margin too much for Brisbane to reel back.

Adam Simpson's men emerged from the contest injury-free, and will only be strengthened by the week off and the potential return of Josh Kennedy in the coming weeks.

Jack Darling topped the goal count with four majors in the muggy conditions, while Jamie Cripps and Liam Ryan were just as influential with three goals each.

Dayne Beams was best afield for the Lions with 32 disposals, yet the class and efficiency of the Eagles was well above that of the home side.

With the Eagles intent on making quick work of lower-tiered opposition, the contest panned out to be far tighter in the opening term, with Brisbane's sporadic bursts allowing them to kick four goals against West Coast's five.

The slippery ball - a result of the humid weather - resulted in numerous skill errors and dropped marks throughout the quarter, yet the Eagles and Lions were still willing to take the ball through the centre of the ground.

Despite their early fumbles several potentially dangerous turnovers, the Lions finally managed to surge through the centre effectively, with their strong running allowing Nick Robertson to secure the first goal of the afternoon.

Matching the Eagles for contested possessions and clearances, Brisbane's ferocity and physicality around the ball was commendable.

But the fluidity of the Eagles soon came into effect however, with Cripps putting through the Eagles' first at the 13-minute mark of the term, before Daniel Venables followed up just moments later.

Both sides' improved ability to move the ball coast-to-coast and directly through the centre of the ground opened the floodgates, with Brisbane's effective, yet scrappier movement, resulting in goals to Daniel McStay and Jarrod Berry to put the Lions' noses in front.

But West Coast's edge and added class proved to be too much - despite a crafty Zac Bailey goal off the back of a mid-air kick from Daniel Rich - with Darling, Daniel Venables and Ryan each converting to take a 10-point lead at quarter-time.

The Eagles' original plan to crush their opposition's spirits came into effect in the second term, with their unanswered four-goal quarter completely displacing the home side.

With West Coast weathering the greasy conditions far better in the early stages of the term, Darling, Cripps and Ryan booted their second majors for the afternoon in just the space of 10 minutes, all of which coming from smooth passages of play.

Unlike the opening term in which Brisbane found a way to burst through the middle of the ground, such movement was stifled throughout the second quarter, primarily thanks to West Coast's excellent set-up behind the ball.

The Eagles conversely had no such issues, with Cripps' third goal bringing huge concerns to Chris Fagan's men, who had conceded six consecutive West Coast majors.

Although attempting to recreate their run through the centre, the Lions were let down by their tardy ball skills, with West Coast pouncing upon their opposition's skill errors in the corridor and scoring heavily as a result.

With the situation fast becoming ugly for the Lions, missed shots on goal proved to be costly for the few chances they managed to get the ball inside 50; the defensive force of Tom Barrass and Jeremy McGovern keeping the Lions' big forwards at bay.

Mark Hutchings was similarly influential in quelling Dayne Zorko, with the Brisbane skipper kept to just five touches in the first half, as the likes of Jack Redden and Luke Shuey ran rampant to give the Eagles a 35-point lead at the major change.

While Brisbane lifted throughout the third term, the Eagles still found themselves in control, despite only increasing their half-time margin by just the one point.

Lewis Taylor at last broke the Eagles' scoring run with a classy snap in congestion, putting through the Lions' first major since the 26-minute mark of the first term.

Brisbane's work was quickly undone however, with the Lions' defence seemingly caught unawares as Hutchings jagged through a miraculously tight major, before Darling dribbled through his third on the goal line.

With the well-drilled Eagles solid around the ground, their wayward shots on goal nonetheless let the Lions off the hook on several occasions, with five behinds registered for the quarter.

The big Brisbane forwards in Eric Hipwood and Oscar McInerney both came to the fore after quiet first halves, with each converting to narrow the margin and keep their side afloat.

A Willie Rioli major levelled the goals scored between the two sides for the term, with the margin resting at 36 points at three-quarter time.

Although the game seemed all but over, Brisbane's refusal to bow out of the contest was admirable, with their spirited four-goal final quarter two better than that of their opposition.

With the Lions beginning to find a sense of fluency, Beams and Bailey capitalised as a result, booting back-to-back majors to slice the margin to just four straight kicks after just two minutes of play.

Darling immediately snuffed any such hope of resurgence, with a clinical clearance from Shuey gifting the key forward an easy goal, before Ryan restored the original advantage in less than a minute.

Beams once again tried to reignite the spark with his second major, and was followed up by Rhys Mathieson's long range goal, but the former captain's influence was abruptly cut short after copping a head knock with Zorko.

As the Eagles retained possession in the game's twilight stages, the Lions' season ultimately came to an end, with the final margin resting at 26 points.
