Collingwood has defeated Brisbane by a convincing 31 points at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.
The Lions came out switched on and look set to control the game, initially stopping the Pies’ run.
However Collingwood shined in the second half, and led by Jordan De Goey with four goals, disrupted Brisbane’s preference to move the ball slowly with short kicks and uncontested marks.
Despite the efforts of Dayne Beams (33 disposals) and Mitch Robinson (two goals, 22 disposals), the Lions simply couldn’t keep up with the Magpies’ speed.
The first term belonged to Brisbane, who controlled the match with a patient, possession-style game, refusing to let Collingwood play the fast, high-paced footy they wanted to.
But the Lions failed to make the most of their oppurtunities and scored just three goals despite dominating the inside 50s 22-6.
Both teams were desperate for a win following last week’s devastatingly close losses, but were initially unable to convert their hunger to goals.
The Lions and Magpies missed chances until Tom Cutler scored with a nice kick on the run.
Collingwood struggled to get the ball out of their defensive 50 and turned over the ball over, leading to Lewis Taylor scoring the Lions’ second with a long bomb from long range.
Brisbane continued to dominate, moving the ball down the ground with patience and clocking up possessions as a result.
However it wasn’t all good news for Brisbane, with key defender Darcy Gardiner making his way to the bench after dislocating his shoulder in an attempted spoil.
Their bad luck continued, when moments later Jordan De Goey scored Collingwood’s only goal of the term following a Brisbane turnover.
Collingwood had the opportunity with 30 seconds on the clock for a dangerous forward 50 entry.
Yet a shocking turnover by Brodie Grundy allowed the Lions to quickly move the ball forward to Daniel McStay, whose kick dribbled over the line to bring the margin at the first change to 13.
The dominance Brisbane had enjoyed in the first term didn’t carry over to the second and while they still put up a solid fight, Collingwood’s three unanswered goals at quarter’s close saw them win the half.
The Pies came out guns blazing and played the fast paced footy the Lions had executed in the first quarter.
Initially, their forward line struggled to capitalise on the chances given to them with De Goey missing two goals from close range.
But moments later, Collingwood’s work was rewarded and Brody Mihochek kicked the ball over the line soccer style to bring his team within a goal.
Brisbane didn’t panic though, and McStay took a solid grab in front of the sticks to score his second for the match before Eric Hipwood celebrated his 50th game with a major from outside 50.
The Pies didn’t let the Lions’ momentum continue however, and another milestone was met minutes later with Chris Mayne’s nabbing his 200th career goal.
The Lions lost the control they had enjoyed over the game and Collingwood darted around them, with Mihochek running grabbing the ball of the ground and running into open goal to score his second.
Collingwood’s run continued and Travis Varcoe scored the half’s last major, putting the home side in front for the first time so that they ended the term with a three-point lead.
The Magpies ramped up the intensity in the third term with their players stepping up a gear for the quarter.
Brisbane didn’t let the Pies have the lead for long and Hipwood scored his second major of the match in the third quarter’s opening.
However Collingwood responded and youngster Brayden Sier snapped his first goal of his career.
Mason Cox showed why his height is so dangerous and made contested marks look easy, however his kicks drifted away much to the relief of the Lions.
Collingwood’s kicking accuracy improved however, and Mihocheck scored his third after some sloppy defensive work by the Lions before young gun Jaidyn Stephenson broke through congestion and snapped a goal.
It looked like things would go from bad to worse for Brisbane with Dayne Zorko heading to the bench with a sore ankle, however he later returned to the field.
Dayne Beams, who had been a ball magnet in the first half, upped his team’s spirits and scored a much-needed major.
However his hard work was undone after a terrible handball from Brisbane’s defence saw Josh Thomas nab his first goal of the match.
It looked like the Lions could hang on with Robinson scoring a crucial goal, however De Goey then showed off his skills for the Pies with two straight kicks through the sticks in as many minutes.
His goals ended an impressive quarter for the returning player and brought Collingwood’s lead to 28 at the final change.
The final term opened with an impressive snap from the boundary line by Stephenson; his second goal of the match.
The game then continued to slip out of the Lions’ grasp, with Collingwood putting the pressure on (led by Levi Greenwood with 8 tackles) and securing a goal from Mayne to extend their lead.
Robinson tried to claw back the margin slotting another one for his Lions and fighting until the very end, followed by another six-pointer from Hipwood.
Brisbane had another opportunity to score with some nice handball work down the middle, but a sloppy disposal was again their undoing and the ball found its way back to Collingwood.
While Collingwood didn’t capitalise on this opportunity, it didn’t take them long to extend their lead with De Goey bagging his fourth.
Lewis Taylor then converted moments later for the Lions, but it was too late, and the siren sounded with Collingwood a comfortable 31 points in front.
Brisbane will be looking for a win next week against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium, while Collingwood will face off against Port Adelaide at the MCG.
