10 weeks is a long time for AFL players to be left preparing for just their second match of the season.
But even after such a long wait, several star players jumped out of the blocks, putting in memorable performances throughout the weekend.
To commemorate these impressive efforts, here is The Rushed Behind’s Round 2 Team of the Week.
In a nutshell...
The teams who won big on the weekend were rewarded at the selection table, with Geelong, North Melbourne and St Kilda all recording three players in the side.
On the other hand, Adelaide, Carlton, GWS, Hawthorn, West Coast and the Bulldogs were all punished for their losses. No players from these teams made the cut, although some brave solo efforts came close.
The unlucky omissions....
As always, there were some unfortunate players who just missed out on selection.
If there was an extended bench, Fremantle’s Michael Walters and Port Adelaide young gun Connor Rozee would have slotted straight into the side for their virtuoso performances on Saturday. Essendon speedster Adam Saad would be begging for a spot too given his dynamic performance off half-back.
Luke Shuey, Scott Pendlebury, Nick Haynes and Rhys Stanley can also consider themselves unlucky to not be picked after giving valiant efforts in their matches.
The breakdown...
Matt Rowell won the role as temporary captain not because of his experience (or lack thereof), but for his mature performance in Gold Coast’s upset smashing of the Eagles. His two-goal and 26-possession game sees him become the week’s pin-up boy in the AFL world and the temporary skipper of TRBFC.
Max Gawn’s mind-boggling first game as captain for the Demons gives him the vice-captain position, with the skipper leading from the front and rucking Melbourne to a nail-biting one-point victory over the fast-finishing Blues.
While generally starved of height - with many talls failing to make a mark in Round 2 - this week's line-up is flush with excitement.
Charlie Cameron slots in this week's side as a mobile full forward, while Jeremy Howe's gigantic leap has him set to punch above his weight at centre-half back.
Even so, this week's roster is full of goal-scorers all over the ground.
The rebound of Bachar Houli and Zak Jones offers Jack Billings and Shaun Higgins the chance to roam forward dangerously. When tired, the bench is full of veterans and budding superstars in Nat Fyfe, Joel Selwood, Zach Merrett and Christian Petracca.
